Micropile Foundation Systems for Limited Access and Challenging Soil Conditions

Micropiles are high-capacity, small-diameter piles designed for deep foundation support in limited-access areas, poor soil conditions, and structural retrofits.

What Are Micropiles?

Micropiles (also known as mini piles or injection piles) are deep foundation elements with diameters typically ranging from 4 to 12 inches. Installed by drilling and injecting cement grout under pressure, they are reinforced with steel bars or casing to transfer structural loads to deeper, more stable layers of soil or rock.

Advantages of Micropiles

  • Low Vibration: Safe for use near fragile structures or historic buildings
  • Compact Equipment: Easily installed in confined or indoor spaces
  • Deep Load Transfer: Reaches depths of 100+ feet if necessary
  • High Load Capacity: Supports axial and lateral forces effectively
  • Ideal for Retrofitting: Can be installed through existing foundations or floors

Common Applications

  • Foundation underpinning for existing buildings
  • Urban construction with limited access and noise restrictions
  • Telecommunication towers, billboards, and light masts
  • Slope stabilization and retaining wall reinforcement
  • Bridge retrofitting and seismic upgrades
  • Support in areas affected by erosion or groundwater issues

Installation Process

  1. Drill a small-diameter hole to the designed depth
  2. Inject high-strength grout under pressure to fill voids and bond soil
  3. Insert steel reinforcement (bar or casing) into the grout-filled shaft
  4. Allow the grout to cure and develop strength
  5. Cap and connect the micropile to the structure’s foundation or slab

Micropiles vs. Other Foundation Systems

Unlike helical or driven piles, micropiles are ideal when low noise, low vibration, and deep bearing are required. Their versatility makes them a top choice for tight urban sites, retrofits, and geotechnically complex environments where traditional piles may not be feasible.
